 Countdown to the Reunion - 25 (October 2, 2000)

Dear Sayas and Colleagues,

Here's some more feedback/news.

The following is a brief biography of Saya U Htin Paw (Elec 58). He co-founded the Burmese Engineers Association (BEA) with Saya U San Tun (Mech 59), Saya K C Chiu (ChE 63), Lily Win (a) Khin Hta Yee (Tex 72), etc.

Saya U Htin Paw, Saya U San Tun and Saya KC served as the Presidents of BEA before the merger with BASTS to become BAPS. Lily was the secretary (aka "workhorse") of BEA until she relocated to Houston, Texas.

As Saya Allen Htay and others reminded us, "The RIT Reunion and Saya Pu Zaw Pwe did not happen out of the blue." We need to acknowledge the people who had collectively beaten the path to allow smooth sailing by the Organizing Committee to make the Reunion and Saya Pu Zaw Pwe happen. We owe a lot to the founders of BEA, BASES, BAPS, and the organizers of the RIT-related events all over the world. To paraphrase Sir Isaac Newton, we have stood on the shoulders of the giants.

With metta,
Hla Min

                              Saya U Htin Paw's Profile
===============================================================

U Htin Paw (M. Paw) graduated from BOC College in 1958 with B.Sc.Engg. (58), distinguishing his achievement with Double Gold Medals. Shortly prior to graduation (M. Paw) was recruited to Electrical Engineering Department, as Assistant Lecturer by the Dean of Engineering, Mr. Tan Ba Hli. After a short assignment at the department, in late 1958, (M. Paw) left for Post Graduate study at University of Michigan where he received M.S.E (EE) (60) degree in June of 1960. On his return from USA, (M. Paw) reported for an assignment at Union of Burma Applied Research Institute (UBARI) under the Director General Dr. Freddy Ba Hli. Later, he was later reassigned as Electrical Inspector at Electrical Inspectorate, Secretariat, Rangoon. In good four years duration at this Department he took on additional assignment as Part-time lecturer to teach "Electrical Code of Practice" to fourth year students at RIT. In 1969, he finally left Rangoon for California, USA.

Early on arrival in USA, he received several professional registration licenses: M.I.E.E (United Kingdom), P.E. Registrations in three States to practice electrical engineering work. In Los Angeles, California he took on several assignments as Senior Electrical Engineer at several Consulting firms including the last at "Ralph & Parson & Co.". After three years in Los Angeles, he left for the Bay Area to work for "Kaiser Engineer, Oakland" for one year; and eventually ended up working for "Bechtel Engineering & Construction, San Francisco" on varied assignments like: Refinery, Nuclear and Fossil Power Plants, Industrial and Clean Room facilities for a total of 26 years. Holding his last position as Engineering Specialist, he took an early retirement, in 1999 to work on his other assignments in Samatha & Vipassana, Buddhist Religious work. He still holds his student State scholar name "Maung", to this day.

His spouse, Eileen, is a homemaker all her life to take care of the family. Barry Htin Paw, who was only five when they left Rangoon, is a Pediatric Oncologist at Boston Children Hospital, Boston. He earned his M.D. and Ph. D. degrees from UCLA under Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) (NIH) and is currently an "Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, Boston."

Other Community Activities:
=========================

With the help of Bay Area Burmese Engineers, he organized the "Burmese Engineers Association" and served as the first President of the Association.

He has actively supported "Taungpulu Sayadaw earlier Buddhist Sasana activities " in the Bay Area.

He also had actively participated as President of "Theravada Buddhist Society of America" (TBSA). In fact, at the request of Kyaung Dakar U Chit Tun, he personally requested, on U Chit Tun's behalf, Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw to leave behind two Samghas, as resident Monks in the Bay Area -- paving the way to the final founding of TBSA.

He also is a Vice President of Dana Sri Lanka, (DSL) Singapore helping Burmese Samghas studying in Pali and Buddhism at Sri Lanka Pali Universities.

He has resided at 1480 Valdez Wy, Fremont, CA 94539-3661, for over 25 years. He can also be contacted vai e-mail: mpaw1234@ix.netcom.com.
